INDIVIDUAL Therapy

Keeping a child with food allergies safe is demanding in both practical and emotional ways. Many parents courageously read labels, carry epipens, meet with teachers, advocate, bake safe treats, participate in food challenges, and handle emergencies… all while silently managing their own feelings of fear, stress, grief, and more. Therapy provides an opportunity to let it all out. You can express and examine all of the feelings that come up and at the same time, loosen their hold. You can be fearful and brave, feel guilt and pride, despair and resilience. There is room for all of it.

Making parenting decisions can be difficult when the stakes feel so high. Many parents feel torn between wanting to ensure their child’s safety and wanting to make sure their family can still participate in events and activities that bring joy and meaning to their lives. Often this debate gets played out between partners. In therapy, we can slow the conversation down, allowing each parent to be heard and understood. When this happens, it becomes possible to switch from “me vs. you” to “us.” When you are able to work as a team, the whole family benefits from each parents’ values and perspective.
